Mediactive CoverI’m happy to say that Mediactive, the book, is now available in print (Amazon and Lulu) and in a Kindle edition.

And because this project lives under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license, I’ve also published it in full on this site. In addition, you can download it here as a PDF.

This is only the beginning. I’m working on an epub edition to use with other online services, and will be creating a variety of e-book editions that include other kinds of media. Beyond that, I intend Mediactive to be an ongoing, iterative process — with updates here on the website and, eventually new versions of the book itself.

Lots of people have helped me get this far on the journey. I thank you all, and look forward to the next steps.

  1. I’ve not yet gotten your book, but have just read much of the Creative Commons website. Do I understand correctly that if I copy content from multiple commons, and remix the data with some of my own copywrite content, that I would still be able to copywrite the finished product? Including the portions or sections that were gathered from the commons?

In other words, say I am writing an article or blog post about “How To Write A Resume” for my website, and I find and copy portions of a common that relate to the research. Once I write my article, if I’ve left the portions found in the common ‘as found’ without change (a direct copy), can I still claim copywrite of my new article as a whole? Or do I need to credit the common portion seperately?

    Thanks for clarifying!

    • Robert, if you do a “remix” that includes a substantial part of my work, you are obliged to release it under the same terms under which I released it.

  2. I’m going to buy your book next week for I am going to use it as a fundamental base for my master thesis revolving around the development of apps and the disruptive innovation on media. With a little focus on my own app, that I is in development for my master’s degree.

Looking forward to reading Mediactive. I am already a big fan of We the Media.

    Best,
    RJ
